There are several ways to enter the Indian Navy and serve as a commissioned officer or sailor. Here are the main entry points:
1. National Defence Academy (NDA): After completing 10+2 education, candidates can appear for the NDA entrance exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Selected candidates undergo a three-year training program at NDA, Khadakwasla, followed by specialized training at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala.
2. Combined Defence Services (CDS) Entry: Graduates can apply for the CDS exam conducted by UPSC. The successful candidates undergo training at INA and are commissioned as officers in the Indian Navy.
3. University Entry Scheme (UES): Unmarried male candidates pursuing their final year of engineering degree can apply for UES. After selection, they undergo training at INA and are inducted as officers.
4. Technical Entry Scheme (TES): Male candidates who have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and secured minimum qualifying marks can apply for TES. Selected candidates undergo training and are commissioned as officers in the Navy.
5. Short Service Commission (SSC): Graduates or postgraduates can apply for SSC, which allows them to serve for a short duration (10 years extendable to 14 years). SSC officers can also choose to convert to a permanent commission based on specific criteria.
6. Indian Naval Academy (INA): Graduates who wish to join the Executive and Hydrography branches can apply for INA entry through various schemes like Executive (General Service), Hydro Cadre, etc.
7. Naval Dockyard Apprentices School: Aspirants can join as sailors through the Naval Dockyard Apprentices School. Candidates undergo training and specialize in different trades relevant to the Navy.
8. Matric Recruits (MR): After completing 10th standard, candidates can join the Navy as Matric Recruits in various branches such as Chef, Steward, Hygienist, etc.
9. Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR): After completing 10+2, unmarried male candidates can join the Navy as SSR. They undergo training and serve as sailors.
10. Artificer Apprentice (AA): Unmarried male candidates who have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics can join the Navy as AA. They receive training in technical skills.
